This was one of the original classes discussed with issue obtain with gears, no mention either way?

Same coment regarding stub axles for the fly cars like the BMW 3.5CSL as per the 60-70 sports cars.

  3. Ninco spring guide (Not Pro-Race Guides) - spring can be removed
  4. Chassis Trimming/shaving to a maximum of 1mm along each side
  5. Wheel/Tyre combination may be replaced with other hub patterns or Alloys but the overall axle track/tyre width/diameter AND gearing ratios must remain as standard for that particular model

I have reread this years regs and still dont understand this thing about Flycar stubs. I have never seen the rimming/bushing etc thing done. So I dont know why you would do it - dont see any benefit other than replacing stumps for one piece axle so will bow to everyones superior knowledge on this one - Are you talking about a small piece of brass tubing???? Cos if you are then you are not changing the way a wheel is located nor the location of the axle mounting. If thats the case why are we even mentioning it in the regs cos nothing has changed.

I need considerable help with this one cos it sounds a bit anal and something I could never be bothered with

Also why limit it just to Fly, why not every stub axle car.
Also why limit this to just stub axled cars, why not use the same mod to remove slop on solid fronted cars - just asking the question cos I dont understand the mod so dont see why some cars should be given special treatment.

If a cars crap in design then its crap so why bother with it. People stop buying cars with that design feature, manufacturers stop making that design feature , the crap design feature fades into the cupboards of collectors. Manufacturers only make cars with correct front ends that have no need for a modification = simple really. However here on Earth. . . . . .

Help me understand the significances of the mod ??????confused

I have never done this stub axle to solid axle modification, and my FLY car's handle just fine...it is a bit anal as Steve mentioned  ^^^ ..

I take the front wheels of and reglue close to the mount eliminating 90% of the slop.

From my limited knowledge and two particular cars both of which were from Fly, quality of build has a huge variance with their product and im not the first to say this. Ive had chevrons and BMW 3.5 CSL which have so much movement up and down that the wheels rub on the body badly happering the performance of the cars. The BMW has a motor mounted between the front wheels so a solid axle isnt an option, same for the chevron with a body post in the same location so a solid axle isnt an option. Ive also had a couple of Chevrons which have been ok with minimal slop.

If I knew before buying the cars they had issues I probably wouldnt of, but having said that I have because I like these cars and I dont buy any car just to sit on a shelf or at the back of the cupboard. Stuff that, fix the manufacturing fault and enjoy the car for what it was made for....Racing.

As for other brands I havent seen another brand with stub axles but then again I dont buy that many cars.

I have found that any of the excessively floppy stub axles are usually a little long so I just shorten them until they are a tighter fit but still spin easily and that fixes the problem.

Is this still the case for this class and others??? Sorry to be a pain, but "the rules" in most cases of slot racing for me this year have done nothing but suit others...

This forum seems to be focused on the "rules" but not reading them...

A bit over it atm....

I am a bit confused, you have highlighted the rules and made a statement, is there a point I missed or a question that is hidden in the message.  I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve.

The M1's shouldn't have different size rims? I have a slot it rear end on mine "to suit Fly Classics" and the rims are narrower than standard. Hasn't made it go any better and the standard car I have is actually quicker

I did not know that M1's were being run with different size rims.  If this is so then it should have been picked up or at least questioned by the scrutineers.  We run Gp 5 next at Geds so maybe this can be an advance warning.

ok who's got the wrong size rims? so they/we know!

My BMW M1 has 13.00 mm width rims and diameter is 13.40 mm so anyones alloys match that?

When i asked the question most looked away and i was told "well there not as wide so its a disadvantage"...

Why do i feel so bad about asking about the rules and trying to uphold them...??

When i know there is no alloy that size!!

Chronologically

The original note in this thread is dated 29/10/08 as seen above by when Steve last  editied it.

Extracted from Final set of rules posted by Steve 1/12/08

Group 5

52. Any brand Box stock cars with 18k motor limit

53. Wheel/Tyre combination may be replaced with other hubs from within the class or Alloy wheels

54. Replacement spur/contrate gear of same dimensions/teeth number as per original

These threads are titled proposed regs and rules and do not govern the final set of rules accepted at the start of the year.

I am certainly not taking sides in this matter nor was I present at the last event however in this interest of the debate I believe this to be important.

Well spotted Rob, I can see why these ended up being the rules, much simpler.

From the generic rules...

14. If any consumable's (gears, pinions, motors, tyres, bushings, wires, braid,

axles, wheels and tyres) are worn/damaged/replaced the following applies:

Such items listed may be replaced with generic items providing they

do not alter the performance of or the specifications of the car

21. Overall width must remain as standard for the model

From the generic rules - complete text for section 14.

14. If any consumable's (gears, pinions, motors, tyres, bushings, wires, braid,
axles, wheels and tyres) are worn/damaged/replaced the following applies:
Such items listed may be replaced with generic items providing they
do not alter the performance of or the specifications of the car i.e. must
have the same gear ratio as original and motor type as per original and
wheel track width no wider than original.

I would argue that the overall  tyre diameter is more of a performance issue than any gain found in ± 1 mm in wheel width.

Ultimately we can interpret the rules to suit ourselves in so many ways.

But I will ask this - how far do we want to go with this?

Using softer or better conductive braid ,

MJK's do their diameters match original specs? certainly one way of changing gearing.

New bushes are they manufactured to perhaps tighter tolerances quieting the gear train down reducing vibration?

By using alloy gears do we get a better mesh than standard?

etc....

All these little things add up I'm sure to altering / improving the performance of the car.

Perhaps Steve was right originally in saying allowing mods to cars was fraught with danger.

I'm trying to provide a constructive independent view on whats presented here.

Dave, you're out?
Because of ^^^all this?

I can assure most of you blokes that are tinkering are doing better than those of us (me) who aren't.
I reckon I've got the most original cars on the track and it ain't helping me.
I will put in more time on my cars when I learn what to do (Properly) and finally get off my arse and buy the bits and pieces I need to do it right.

Untill then, Dick'll keep bringing up the rear!!!!

(Saucey!!)

Look at the Porsche 997's (I know, I hate to bring it up again...) they are a great class and nothing major is done to them.
I know you guys don't like OOTB racing but there's something to be said for just chucken' them on the track and having a go. No one argues over them....

Dick
